"Walking the walk: Lessons from 10 years in the world of Louisiana climate change policy"

SIERRA CLUB NEW ORLEANS GROUP, TULANE GREEN CLUB, and the League of Women Voters of New Orleans PRESENT: AN EVENING WITH WRITER AMY CLIPP (Louisiana Coastal Master Plan)

Speaker for April 9th is Amy Clipp, who worked on the first draft of the Coastal Master Plan. The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority will present the next 50 year master plan to the Louisiana Legislature next month, and the Legislature must vote up or down on the plan. The plan projects that if the state takes no action, more than 4,000 square mile of coastal land could be lost over the next half century.  The researchers concluded that New Orleans’ infrastructure would be the hardest hit in the state, losing approximately $1.7 billion in public structures such as roads, ports, and buildings.

SUNDAY, APRIL 9TH, at 7:00 pm. Doors Open 6:30
Richardson Memorial Hall, Tulane Architecture School, RM 204.
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (parking areas are Cowen Circle, St Charles Ave., and Engineer Road, running from Freret St to the side of the Architecture School building)

Bicycle Share is Coming to New Orleans!

On Feb 12th, The New Orleans Group of the Sierra Club will host Dan Favre of Bike Easy, who will share all of the information about the Bike Share coming to New Orleans! Dan has been working with the City of New Orleans and Social Bicycles, the company chosen to bring Bike Share to New Orleans.

What is a Bike Share? Bike share is a network of bicycles that allows users to make short trips quickly, conveniently and affordably. Bike share is in over 60 American cities. A bicycle share system (e.g. 700 bicycles) would have a profound impact on improving New Orleans’ transportation network.

What impact will it have on New Orleans? As you know, the benefits of bicycling are many. The bike share extends those benefits to everyday people who don’t usually ride bicycles. More bicycles on the road have created safer streets in communities around the world. Bicycle share gets more people on bicycles and improves safety for everyday riders.

Come learn how you can get a bike station in your neighborhood!!

When: Sunday Feb 12, 2017
Doors open at 6:30pm - Program starts at 7pm

Where: Audubon Zoo Dominion Auditorium (enter behind statue of Audubon)

Coastal Resiliency : Louisiana's Homes in the Face of Climate Change

Orleans Sierra Club presents:
Sunday, October 9

Coastal Resiliency : Louisiana's Homes in the Face of Climate Change

Johanna DeGraffenreid from the Gulf Restoration Network will speak. GRN has been fighting for the state to recognize that we are past the point where levees and coastal restoration are enough to protect communities. The state has laid out potential solutions in the Coastal Master Plan like flood-proofing, home elevation and voluntary relocation programs, but has not offered much funding to implement these "nonstructural" solutions. These communities are being called "Resettlement Zones" by the Office of Community Development. La. coastal communities are at risk of getting washed away from rising seas, flooding, and storm surge.

June Meeting on Louisiana Scenic Rivers

Orleans Sierra Club presents: Louisiana Scenic Rivers

In 1970, the Louisiana Legislature created the Louisiana Natural and Scenic Rivers System. The System was developed for the purpose of preserving, protecting, developing, reclaiming, and enhancing the wilderness qualities, scenic beauties, and ecological regimes of certain free-flowing Louisiana streams.

I will present a brief introduction to our program, providing information on the Scenic Rivers Act and a summary of our rules and regulations. I'll also spend time discussing some of the recreational opportunities that our Florida Parish streams provide. In addition, I'll present information on many of the threats these streams face as well as some of the steps our program is taking to protect these resources.

Additional information on Louisiana Natural and Scenic River System can be found at http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/scenic-rivers

Matt Weigel

COASTS, NOT COAL - RAM Terminal Hearing

COASTS, NOT COAL
The past year and a half has been an amazing experiment in real democracy. Together, the people of southeast Louisiana spoke up and local government listened: we don't want the RAM Coal Export terminal or its dirty coal trains. City and Parish resolutions were passed, Plaquemines Parish denied a construction permit, and a Belle Chasse judge ordered the state permit revoked.

But the RAM Terminal is still at it. It has reapplied for a state permit from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and a public hearing has been scheduled for next week.

Now, more than ever, we need your voice. We can't afford to let the West Bank transform into an industrial corridor and threaten one of our most important coastal restoration projects.

Will you commit to coming to the hearing next week and bring 5 friends and neighbors? The louder our voice of opposition, the more difficult it will be for the DNR to conclude that this project is in the public interest.

Here are the details:
What: Press Event and DNR Hearing on RAM’s Coastal Use Permit

When:
September 17th (Thursday), press event at 5:30 pm, Hearing at 6 pm.
Where: Belle Chasse Auditorium, 8398 LA-23, Belle Chasse, LA

Why:
Stand up for community and coastal restoration by holding a sign at the press event and sharing a public comment at the hearing! Refreshments will be available.
Join us Thursday, September 17th in Belle Chasse to stand up for coast not coal.
For any questions or to RSVP, click the "Join Us" link above or send an email to Grace Morris at grace.morris@sierraclub.org.
