Common Sense Solutions to Waste, Litter and Pollution at the City Level


The New Orleans Group of the Sierra Club welcomes Max Ciolino from No Waste NOLA for our February 21, 2015 meeting. Max will speak about much needed waste reduction initiatives that would provide needed sustainability improvements for New Orleans. http://www.nowastenola.org/

New Orleans Group Program - Verdi Gras "The Greening of Mardi Gras" - Sunday Feb. 12


"VerdiGras: Lessons We Are Learning As A Part of Greening Mardi Gras" Holly Groh (co-creator of Verdi Gras, along with her husband Kirk) will speak at the Audubon Zoo, Dominion Auditorium. Verdi Gras is an inclusive carnival krewe dedicated to inspiring others and ourselves in creating and supporting a greener, cleaner Mardi Gras for all - with a spirit of creativity and fun, and reducing our dependence on foreign throws and throws in general.

On Saturday Feb 11, Verdi Gras will have recycling bins along St Charles Ave between Amelia and Toledano Streets, collecting beads, aluminum, and cardboard during the Pontchartrain Parade!. Verdi Gras is looking for volunteers to man the recycling stations. Email Holly at: kandhgroh@yahoo.com if you would like to be a part of this exciting program. Then come to the Sierra Club program on Sunday Feb 12th to hear all about it, and start planning for next year!!

Enter gate to far right of main public entrance and behind statue of Audubon. Parking plentiful and safe. Call (504) 416-8710 with any questions. The program is free and open to everyone. Refreshments at 6:30PM. Program 7 to 8PM.

City administrators on Thursday announced the recycling pickup schedule for residents in service areas covered by Metro Disposal and Richards Disposal.More than 17,000 residents have signed up for the city's free recycling services, which will begin on May 2.The pickup schedule for residents in the service area covered by Metro Disposal is: Monday: 8th Ward, Gentilly, Bywater
Tuesday: Lakeview
Wednesday: New Orleans East (North side of I-10), I-10 to Hayne Boulevard from Paris Road to Downman Road)
Thursday: Pontchartrain Park, Almonaster Corridor, Upper 9th Ward
Friday: 7th Ward, Bayou St. John to Elysian Fields Avenue, the Lake to Mirabeau Avenue, Esplanade Ridge, Treme
Saturday: New Orleans East (South side of I-10), Lake Catherine area, Lower 9th Ward
Below is the recycling schedule for residents in the service areas covered by Richards Disposal: Monday: Algiers
Tuesday: Esplanade Avenue to I-10, Rampart Street to City Park Avenue
Wednesday: I-10 to Napoleon Avenue, S. Front Street to S. Broad Street
Thursday: Napoleon Avenue to Exposition Avenue, S. Front Street to Fontainebleau Drive
Friday: Audubon Park to Monticello Avenue, S. Front Street to Earhart Boulevard
Saturday: Earhart Boulevard to I-10, Jefferson Parish Boundary Line to S. Broad Street
Residents in these areas who are not yet registered can sign up at http://recycle.nola.gov.Carts will be provided by the city only on request. Residents may also fill out the Recycling Service Notice manually and mail it or drop it off to City Hall at 1300 Perdido Street, Room 1W03, New Orleans, LA 70112 or fax it to 658-3801.

Recycling drop-off for Jefferson Parish is Saturday in Marrero

The Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs, in conjunction with the Recycling Foundation, Inc. of Baton Rouge, will hold a recycling drop-off event Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at The Recycling Foundation, 6025 River Road, Marrero.

Items also will be accepted on the east bank, at the Joseph S. Yenni Building, 1221 Elmwood Park Blvd., Jefferson.

Materials to be accepted are: plastic containers Nos. 1 through 7, including milk jugs, food and beverage containers, shampoo bottles and detergent containers; paper products, including newspapers, phone books, magazines, junk mail, cardboard (folded and flattened for easy handling), and paperboard (such as cereal boxes); shredded paper in plastic bags; and metal cans and lids, including aluminum cans, tin cans and steel cans.

Materials that will not be accepted are glass containers, plastic bags, hazardous waste containers, Styrofoam and used motor oil or other automotive fluids.

Used auto fluids are accepted at the trash drop-off sites at 6440 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, and 600 David Drive on the east bank.

Recyclables do not have to be separated by type.

Get the new region wide recycling resource guide book (PDF 730 Kb - not small but worth it). This comprehensive Guide book lists 39 categories of items that can be recycled in the New Orleans metro region and where to bring them.

Holy Cross homes tour helps mark Earth Day

Even the orange school bus that transported people on the Holy Cross tour was powered by biodiesel fuel made from discarded vegetable oil that once fried local oysters and beignets.

RECYCLING DAY was a huge success in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish

Thank you for your support - you made the recycling drop-off event held on Saturday, April 14 in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans a huge success! The results of the event are as follows:

JEFFERSON PARISH: 4,230 lbs (West Bank) + 17,660 lbs (East Bank, 310 cars) = 21,890 lbs
NEW ORLEANS: 4,230 lbs (West Bank) + 15,060 lbs (East Bank) = 19,290 lbs

A total of 41,180 lbs (20 tons) was collected! Due to the success of the event, we are planning additional drop-off events in the near future. The first event is tentatively scheduled for SATURDAY, JULY 28, 2007 (Get the flyer here) so keep collecting your recyclables and spread the word!

17 months after Katrina, the city is facing massive challenges: Rebuilding, crime, little affordable housing, expanded landfills, and not enough classes for school-children. Despite these problems, the city is signing fat contracts for automated twice-weekly garbage pickup and a Disney-fied French Quarter. Meanwhile, the city has done nothing to reinstate curb-side recycling, despite the energy savings, and reduced need for landfill space that recycling provides.
