The Palm Oil Crisis - Monthly Program for June 8th!!

Sierra Club meeting. Sunday, June 8 

Courtney Eparvier, Curator at the Audubon Zoo, will discuss the Palm Oil crisis. it's production, it's global impact, efforts being made to slow down deforestation, and what consumers can do to help.

Countless acres of tropical forests are being destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations. The existence of tropical forests, orangutans and other wildlife is threatened. Palm oil is an ingredient in many candies and other food products. 

Social and refreshments at 6:30 in the Audubon Zoo Nims Center, near the statue of Audubon.

Monthly Program - May 18 featuring Dr. Thomas Sherry

Hi All,

The New Orleans Sierra Club group is hosting our monthly meeting on May 18 featuring a talk by Dr. Thomas Sherry from the Tulane Department of Ecology and Environmental Biology.

"Tropical forest loss and fragmentation threaten tropical birds: a case study from Central America"

Dr Sherry's research shows how man made tropical forest loss, fragmentation, loss of large predators like jaguars, and potentially climate change is harming bird populations in Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.

The Sierra Club meets at Audubon Zoo in Dominion Auditorium. For more i information, visit the Sierra Club Delta Chapter event on Facebook. The program is free and open to everyone. Refreshments start at 6:30, talk from 7 to 8 pm

Update on Lafitte Greenway

Daniel Samuels, Architect and president of Friends of Lafitte Corridor is speaking about the ongoing work to transform the Lafitte Greenway, a 3-mile former shipping canal and railway corridor, into a public green space that connects the historic French Quarter to Bayou St. John.

Bob Marshall of The Lens on the SLFPA lawsuit

Bob Marshall, environmental reporter for The Lens and two time Pulitzer award winner will speak about the lawsuit by the local Flood Protection Authority against the oil and gas industry. The lawsuit seeks to require the Petroleum industry to take financial responsibility for the damage they have caused to Louisiana wetlands.
